The Upshot, data blog by the New York Times, loves playing with numbers. One of their recent works features an interactive slopegraph (visualization form developed by Edward Tufte) showing the Premier League standings if the hypothetical case if only goals by English players counted.
The table above is the result of a little thought experiment: What would the standings look like in a hypothetical league in which a goal does not count unless it is scored by an English player?
I love these “what if…” visualizations – they let you explore something familiar from a completely different angle. The German newspaper Die Zeit actually produced a similar piece on the Winter Olympics in Sochi not long ago – and also used slopegraphs for that.
